On the SAIL site, the English version (translated by Bernard) has launched yesterday, as well as the interactive area map.
We have had a bit of an issue with the naming of the map: finding the right balance between what’s clear (on which label do you click when you’d like to know where the various events are taking place?) and what’s accurate (in this case, vs. the printable version of the map).
The solution found is to call the interactive version “SAIL grounds” instead of simply “map”, and leaving the print version alone under the “map” title. In the main navigation, we have only “SAIL grounds”, while the “map” link is (for now) to be found under “accessibility” (which we might choose to re-translate to “access”, or merge into the upcoming “visitor information”).
What’s happening now is that you’re requiring the users to choose between the screen and the print version of the map before they are even aware of the existence of either, and of either’s characteristics. Worse yet: by using a non-obvious term (grounds instead of map) in the top-level navigation, you are probably even turning away a significant slice of your audience interested in “a map”, as chances are a lot will find neither object.
We’re still working on the English translation of that map, by the way, as well as on a deeper version of the program (things are ready but we’re still playing around with the layout of the template), on that “visitor information” part and on live coverage during the event. Another three really fun weeks ahead!
